Sheriff Joe Pervis told me moments ago that a freight train derail a short time ago.
Shortly after 7:30 tonight a freight train derailed near the Frankeweing Community in Giles County. Shortly after the first trail derailed a second train hit the first trail. Sheriff Joe Pervis and his deputies along with Giles County Emergency Management, county volunteers and EMS personnel are all on the scene assessing the situation. Old Highway 64 and Tight Bark Hollow Road were closed while, deputies and EMA personnel worked with the train crews to determine what the derailed cars were carrying and whether any of the material could be hazardous. Just before 9 o’clock Sheriff Pervis told me Giles County Ema personnel and CSX railroad personnel have deermined that there is no threat to public safety and the roads have been reopened. Cleanup crews will remain on the scene as recovery and debris removal efforts continue. We are following this developing situation and will keep you informed.

At least two cars ended up in a creek. Old Highway 64 and other roads in the area are closed until it can be determined if there is any danger to the public.
